Founded on the belief that we all have a shared responsibility in protecting our environment for future generations.
Kevin Wheaton's love for landscaping began when he was just eight years old, helping his dad mow lawns. Those early days spent riding along taught him more than just the technical side of the work—they instilled a deep appreciation for building relationships with clients and the joy of working outdoors.
After earning a degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design from Michigan State University, Kevin worked as a designer and foreman for a local landscaping company in Traverse City. While he enjoyed the work, he dreamed of creating something of his own: a company that combined his passion for craftsmanship and sustainability while honoring the natural beauty of Northern Michigan.
In 2013, Kevin took the leap and founded Sustainable Landscapes. His vision was clear: to create outdoor spaces that weren't just beautiful, but functional, timeless, and deeply connected to their surroundings. By prioritizing sustainability—through native plants, locally sourced materials, and environmentally responsible practices—Kevin built a company dedicated to protecting and enhancing the region's unique landscapes.
Today, Sustainable Landscapes continues to put down deep roots in the Grand Traverse region. Kevin lives in Traverse City with his wife, Sabrina, their young daughters, Adeline and Emeline, and their dogs, Snickers and Reese.

Since 2021 Sustainable Landscapes has won three Industry awards from the MNLA Awards Program, which recognizes Green Industry companies for their excellence, professionalism, and responsible environmental standards. Most recently, Sustainable Landscapes won an Award in 2023 for the Mid Century Project in our Portfolio.

Kevin and crew did a huge job for me 2 years ago. The flowerbeds around the house had been neglected by the previous owners and the weeds were too healthy. The results are beautiful. I would definitely use Sustainable for more landcaping changes. They also can fertilize the lawn with traditional or child and pet-safe product, which I prefer.

Kevin designed an amazing outdoor space for our family - over a couple of summers Kevin and his team made the design a reality. A beautiful stone wall, limestone stairs leading to a Rosetta patio with fire pit feature and lighting. A front walk and porch remodel, a limestone walkway connecting different areas of our wooded setting completed the most beautiful yard in the neighborhood.
